Winter on Torsey Shores Road

New posting, new blog...............I was having some technical difficulties with the original blog which was a word press blog so I transferred it all to a blogspot blog. It really won't be any different - just a new place to park the information - I moved everything over and don't anticipate any problems with this. (fingers crossed).

So, on to the important stuff..........winter has arrived (those of you that are south for the winter - you lucky devils, you.......it's cold, snowy, windy and did I say cold?? here in Maine) and that means plowing, sanding and winging to keep the road traversable in these deep freeze months. Richard Choate has been doing a fantastic job keeping up with the plowing (thanks Richard!!!) and has had David Harriman come down a few times to sand the hill (and the road) as needed. Since the snow started, we've had accumulation of about 32 inches - not all at once mind you - but it sure adds up fast - especially when it has to be plowed off the road. As a result, we called in the "wing back" truck (driven by a VERY cheerful and smiling Dennis Bruen) and he did his thing today. I took some pictures so all y'all can see (some of you from the warm comfort of a far south place)how wonderful the road looks and what a great job is being done by all. First pic is looking down the hill, second is of the truck, third is at Barry's (going out the road) and the fourth is the curve just past Cindy's. (going toward our end of the road)

More Updates on Torsey Shores Road

It’s been a busy season for the road here on Torsey…….yesterday the fall grading happened. The decision was made to just grade without adding any more gravel this fall, watch what effect the repairs to the ditches and culverts will have on road erosion and in the spring when it’s time to have it graded once again, see what has to be done then.
PIctures show the view from the top of the hill (the first two), from the corner at Barry and Sandy’s, and from the curve between Steve Mairs and Chip Stephens

Colors of the Season

Just thought I’d share a few photos of the beautiful colors on Torsey. I took these when I went kayaking this morning.

Hello All-
I know our Road Association President is working on a web page for our road, but as things change and progress, I thought I would post pictures to keep those who don't live here year round up to date on what is being done and how things look on the road.
In the past couple of months there has been a lot of maintenance/ditch/culvert work done. It started at the end of August with ditch maintenance - the sides of the road were cleared of weeds and saplings and the ditches were cleared out (thanks to Gail, Sandy and Jake for collecting trash from the sides of the road) - in some places up to 6' off the road side. I got a couple of shots of the new and cleaned up road:

Right after the work was done by our contractor, CMP crews came through and limbed and cut back trees that they considered a danger to the power lines. It took them a couple of days to complete both sides of the road and they left a small mess, but at least all the lines are clear now.
Since the ditches had been cleaned out, it was now time to address the culvert issue. As of yesterday, three culverts have been worked on - the first one being the culvert across the road in front of #66. Some dirt was added (thanks to Billy Rourke who so kindly allowed us into his pit with a trailer where we picked up some rock and dirt to use on the road)and some large rocks were added around the culvert to prevent it from shifting any further.

Looks good, right?
The next task was the culvert across the bottom of #129’s driveway. That got cleaned out and then - a BIG thanks to Barry here for the loan of the tractor - the ditch was carved out from #137 back to #129 as there wasn’t a ditch there to begin with.

Once it rains and the water starts flowing and draining we will be able to fine-tune as needed.
The last culvert that was done was at the sharp corner just past #144 - the culvert had to be completely excavated - it was full of debris and had to be cleaned out and dirt had to be put at the entrance to raise the level for water flow. It was by far the worst of them, and once again we will see what happens to the water flow once the rain hits.

So, that’s all for now - at that brings everybody up to date on what is happening here - except - WOW - the colors are GORGEOUS right now!
