Nature 1, Torsey Shores Road 0

Most of the snow has finally melted here on Torsey Shores Road, with pockets of snow here and there along the road edge, but for the most part, the ditches and culverts have been doing their jobs.......with one spectacular exception.  After a night of torrential rain, there was a surprise awaiting the residents today at the large culvert just beyond the pit.......

Our intrepid co-Road Commissioner, Richard Choate, using some quick thinking, gave John Cushing (of Cushing Construction here in Readfield) a call and he was kind enough to come right down and take a look and offer some advice on what should be done.  Even though it is a Sunday, John came back with his backhoe...........
......with which he was able to apply some pressure to the culvert to bring it back to (almost) ground level so the water could flow through to the other side.  Before work can be started to reseat the culvert, the water that is now backed up has to be drained, so John got a couple of (REALLY)big rocks from the curve just before the beach to weigh it down and bring it to the level where the water can drain through it.

The water is now draining nicely..............

Let it Snow!!!

Got a bit of snow here these last few days. (ok, weeks, but who's counting!)  As I'm sure you all know, it's been a storm heavy winter this year - we've logged about 60 feet of snow since the season began (ok, not 60, but trust me it feels that way sometimes!)........this most recent storm gave us another 15 or so inches - a combination of storms on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Luckily, the perennially smiling Dennis Bruen came through on Monday to wing back the snowbanks so when Richard plowed there was somewhere to put all this new snow!  Here are some pictures for you all to enjoy.

Another spectacular sunset!

On the way out the road yesterday, I got a couple of really good sunset shots - one taken on the road, one taken at the top of the road and one at the top of Kents Hill ski slope.

January 12, 2011 Snowstorm

Not a record snowfall, but definitely enough to make skiers and snowmobilers very happy!  As ever, our snowplower did a fabulous job on the road!

A New Year

Hope your holidays were fantastic and I would like to take this opportunity to say Happy New Year to everybody.  It is snowing here in New England today.......as it should be I'm sure some of you are thinking.......the wind is howling as the snow falls which makes getting a picture very difficult.  I promise some snow pictures in the next day or so once the wind dies down and the snow stops falling.

I snapped a few sunset pictures right after the new year - the temperature was on the warm side (for New England in January that is!) so that is the source of the fog you can see in a couple of the pictures.

Dusting off the Blog

Here I am again............just dusting off the blog and getting ready to start posting about the weather and the road - with pictures of course!  For now, please accept a couple of sunset pictures I snapped in November - with my solemn promise I will post more frequently.  And a big thank you to all who mentioned how much they miss the blog! (and you all know who you are)

The Moose

Another visit to the end of Torsey Shores Road by a moose.
